Couples and Family Therapy Costs
Couples therapy is typically not covered by health insurance because it is not considered "medically necessary."
Couples therapy focuses on communication, trust, commitment, conflict management, and developing shared values and visions for the future. Some of our providers are trained in evidence-based models of treatment such as the Gottman Method of Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relational functioning and marital quality. As such, this is a valuable service. It is important to note, however, that engaging in couples therapy is considered elective rather than "medically necessary."
Health insurance companies consider services to be medically necessary when they are needed for the diagnosis or treatment of an illness or injury. Health plans cover individuals, not couples or relationships (and in couples therapy, we consider the "relationship" to be our client).
That said, if one of the members meets criteria for a diagnosable mental health disorder and the treatment is focused on improving the symptoms of that disorder (rather than on improving the relationship), sessions between partners might be covered by the health insurance of the diagnosed individual. In all other cases, the costs will be billed directly to the members of the couple.
We believe in providing a supportive, non-judgmental space while also utilizing years of experience and training in some of the most effective methods in helping our couples find the best paths for them. We also love to educate our clients and community so that they can become experts in their own mental health.
